RAF Wainfleet Target 4
Target 4 from the air. The old barge was the previous target but has been replaced by the new vessel. The actual centre of the target is the square section amidships painted with a black circle. The old barge is still used as a target for 1000lb bombs in order to preserve the life of the new vessel. (© MoD) Target 4 from the control tower. (© ESAG 2003)

The "new" target 4 with the old barge to the left and behind. The whole area around the two ships has now (2004) become very unsatble due to the shifting creeks and is virtually impossible to access by foot or vehicle. (© ESAG 2003) A close-up of the "new" target 4 from the rear. A distict list to port can be seen which is due to it slipping off a previous vessel and settling in the creek.

Another close-up of the "new" target 4 vessel from the front. The list has proved a bonus as it helps to prevent the 3kgs from passing straight through the vessel's hull which is evident by the previous image. (© ESAG 2003) Closer inspection of the barge reveals it's true state - a mass of holes through which bombs can easily pass making marking extremely difficult. The massive hole amidships was caused by a 1000lb bomb which proves the wisdom of designating the old barge for this weapon instead of the "new" ship. (© ESAG 2003)
The protrusions visible above the water line are a previous vessel which has been claimed by the ever-shifting creeks on the range. Another close up of the old target 4.
