Although called RAF
Wainfleet as the original control site was situated at Wainfleet St.Mary,
it was moved and is now incorporated into the control tower site situated
at Friskney. The tower itself houses two quads -2 & 3 - which are situated
in the protrusion directly below the balcony and are ideal for marking on
targets 2,3 &4. Target 4 can also be illuminated by laser from quad
2. The site sits amidst fields of arable farmland but a number of cattle
can quite often be seen roaming along the forward sea defence. It's an idyllic
location in the summer but a little barren in the winter!
Quad
1 is the most northerly of the range quad towers and is situated near the
old range control site. This quad is particularly well situated for marking
on target 4.
Quad 5 is now out of use and this photograph is taken from the approach
road which is still used to gain access to the range. Note the two hulks
in the background which are targets 2 (right) and 3.
This tower has been the mistaken for the strafe and dive circle targets
on a number of occasions (not by the RAF) which led to a hasty retreat by
the occupant at the time!
Quad
5 from quad 6.
Quad
6 was the first to be withdrawn from use as it came within the danger area
for certain types of weapon dropped at the range. Every new weapon type
being dropped at the range requires a comprehensive review of safety procedures,
especially relating to the danger area created by possible debris dispersal.
